September National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month
Read about available therapies or find a treatment center in your area (anywhere in the country) on the official government web site for National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month at recoverymonth.gov.
Substantial progress has been made in the past few years in how we think about and treat drug addiction. A number of states have moved toward mandatory treatment, rather than jail time, for first- and second-time drug possession offenses. Of course, there remains a great deal of progress to be made. Read about how you can contribute at recoverymonth.gov. October National Family Health Month
Family physicians are disappearing at an alarming rate, as medical students are pushed into more financially lucrative specialties and managed-care organizations make ever-increasing demands that reduce doctors' ability to meet with patients for more than a few minutes each visit. While other professions, including Nurse Practitioners, are stepping in to fill the gaps, it remains important to recognize the role of family physicians as primary care doctors and to promote health and well being from a family perspective. It's what we do all the time here at First Avenue--looking at and health and illness from a family perspective, and helping the whole family to make life better for themselves and each other. For more information on National Family Health Month, visit the American Academy of Family Physicians at aafp.org.
October is a busy month for health awareness events. It's also Depression and Mental Health Month, Brain Injury Awareness Month, and the 9th through 14th is National Healthcare Quality Week. Of course, the best thing you can do to promote your family's health and the health of others is to play an active role, from asking questions of your doctor to pushing your health insurer to provide adequate coverage for all types of effective healthcare.
