Counselor's introduction - Deciding and then making an appointment to see a therapist can be both exciting and anxiety-provoking. You may feel excitement at the prospect of finally being able to talk to someone confidentially about your concerns, but apprehensive about what might happen in the therapy session. I understand these feelings so my first priority is to put you at ease. I am here to listen and be supportive, and to help you cope with, manage or resolve the challenging issues, situations or relationships that have brought you into therapy.
My approach to therapy is eclectic; I use a combination of supportive/humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, family systems and mindfulness-based theories and techniques. I believe the therapist and client relationship is based on mutual respect and trust, and involves open, honest communication. Together we will determine the agenda and goals of therapy. During the session I will listen, ask questions, provide feedback, perhaps offer a different perspective of or way of looking at your issues and relationships, and provide resources and referrals, if appropriate. Additionally, I can offer stress management tools to deal with anxiety, depression, or anger.
